My strategy as a researcher evolved gradually and concurrently with the understanding of my professional and social environment. My role as a scientist in such a setting had to be re-created; the society's perception of science fell into extremes. I was perceived either as an individual conducting research for pure academic purposes with little social relevance or as someone who should be able to solve complex economic and social problems. It is in this context that I gradually identified my role: My contribution as a scientist would be of little relevance unless research findings build on and feed into a system that translates the generated knowledge into applications within the social and economic context of the country and the region she is serving. My goal is to offer, through sound research knowledge, solutions and options for the conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity in Lebanon and the Middle East .
My research activities could be divided in time under two main phases: In the first phase all projects focused on the characterization of the existing biodiversity at the species level. These projects are based on regional and international collaborations that target neglected and under utilized plant species. The second phase focus on a proactive approach to biodiversity conservation which focused on the valuation of biodiversity: A perceived value would encourage the society to conserve biodiversity.
