What
does IBSAR stand for? |
IBSAR- means vision in Arabic. Our center name
is "Nature Conservation Center at AUB"
(It was previously known as the "Initiative
for Biodiversity Studies in Arid Regions"
Center). |
| |
| |
|
When
did IBSAR start? |
IBSAR
(Nature Conservation Center for Sustainable
Futures) was established in 2002, as an
interfaculty research center dedicated to
biodiversity research, development and knowledge
dissemination. IBSAR serves as a platform for
innovative research in biodiversity that will
expand economic opportunities and promote
sustainable practices. |

| |
|
What
is the link between AUB and IBSAR?
 |
The
vision was started in 2002 when a group of
academics at AUB decided to combine their
knowledge and intellectual capabilities to
explore and develop biodiversity-related
economic opportunities through research and multidisciplinary approaches.
Three years later (2005) the University
recognized the pioneering efforts of IBSAR
Faculty members and established IBSAR as an Interfaculty
Center under the Office of the Provost. The
Center has acted as a platform of innovative
thinking and collaborative activities and has
attracted more than 40 faculty members,
students, and fresh AUB graduates who work
together in a multidisciplinary environment.

|
Why was IBSAR initiated? |
IBSAR members believe that nature in semi-arid regions is valuable and constitutes a living asset, a natural heritage that cannot be ignored or abandoned for it is a legacy that contributes to the quality of life in the Middle East. Nature, IBSAR believe, offers opportunities yet to be discovered and should be utilized in a sustainable manner and conserved for future generations. |

|
|
What
does IBSAR do?
 |
IBSAR
focuses on the complex and often unique
challenges associated with sustainable
development, conservation and use of biodiversity. IBSAR’s
multidisciplinary platform uses biotechnology
and basic biological and social research tools
to characterize and document biodiversity in
arid regions and to propose options for its
conservation and sustainable use.
